" Tommy" came into rescue very sick and weighing 3 lbs. You could lift him with your little finger. I was at his foster mom's house and fell in love with him. Who wouldn't fall in love with Tom Cruise, right?

Well, Tommy got well and he is just FEARLESS! Mahi will actually lay on top of him and chew on him like he was a stuffed toy. Tommy grabs Mahi and chews on him back. They are usually both covered in slobber.Photo: Mahi and the new rescued cat—Tom Cruise.

[The doggie daycare] keeps sending me pictures about what my dog does in daycare while I am busy earning his keep.

Mahi and I have been doing a lot of volunteer work for Rescue organizations in our area. Mahi comes with me on “home visits” along with his best friend, a Doberman named Lover. Mahi is introduced as an example of how great of a dog you can get from a Rescue Organization. Recently IL Doberman Rescue had a reunion of all the dogs they have adopted out in the last year. At the reunion party there was a photographer. Mahi had his picture taken with is best friend, “Lover”.

He has run of the house now. He chases the cats constantly, but when he catches them he doesn't know what to do with them..he just slobbers on them. He runs like the wind! He is so powerful and well muscled. it is something to see when he is full-out running. I am training for a marathon and Mahi is training with me, but I run much too slow for him. He loves to chase the geese into the river, but again, when he catches them he doesn't do anything. He goes to daycare on Tuesdays and Thursdays. His daycare mom says he never stops playing.

It turns out he loves the water. I have to keep him out of it most of the time so I don't have to give him a bath every day!

He really is the best dog. So easy-going. I take him on my runs now that the weather has cooled off a bit. He runs at my side and does not chase bikers, roller bladers or other runners on the path. I found a wonderful daycare for him right on my way to work... Mahi has not been crated. He doesn't chew anything but his toys..."

August 2003
The kids in the neighborhood came over to meet him. He just loves kids. One of the kids was only about 2 years old. Mahi seemed to know that he needed to be gentle with him and not knock him over. He loves the water and, if I let him, he will jump right in the river.

Photo: Unfortunately, being white, the mud gets all over him and then he has to get a bath.

A special thank you goes out to Mahina's sponsor: George Mucher, in memory of his wife's childhood pet.

Mahina
Adopted July 29, 2003

Mahina (the moon), a 1 year old, male, neutered White German Shepherd didn't seem to know how to play with toys at first, but he soon found a liking for playing with tennis balls! He also loved his Nylabone! He walked well on a leash, but needed some more experience in this area. In general, he just needed to experience most things — he looked like a country fella in the big city with wide-eyed wonder at everything he saw. He was eager to play with other dogs, even when they barked at him. He didn't usually bark back, but instead didn't understand why they didn't want to play with him! He loved attention and petting, and, most of all — belly rubs!
